Six Senses Douro Valley with Kids: Is This Portugal’s Best Luxury Wine-Country Hotel for Families?
There are some hotels that impress you with grand gestures, and others that stay with you because of the small family moments. For us, Six Senses Douro Valley managed both.
Set among the terraced vineyards of northern Portugal, this beautiful retreat feels peaceful, polished and unmistakably grown-up—yet our girls found plenty to make the stay their own. They made pickles in a hands-on class, swam, played board games in the lounge and enjoyed activities on the River Douro. We could slow down as a family while still being close enough to explore vineyards and the historic city of Lamego.
It was not completely perfect for families. Our main frustration was that children could use the pool only during limited hours. For a luxury hotel—and particularly when swimming is such a big part of a family holiday—we found that restriction disappointing.
Even with that caveat, Six Senses Douro Valley remains one of those rare hotels where parents can enjoy a genuinely sophisticated escape without the children feeling like an afterthought.
UKI Travels verdict: Best for families who love food, nature and slow travel, and who want to explore the Douro Valley from an exceptional luxury base. Less ideal if unrestricted pool access is essential to your holiday.
Why visit Six Senses Douro Valley with children?
The Douro Valley is often presented as a destination for couples and wine lovers, but it can be wonderfully rewarding with children. The scenery turns every drive into an adventure: steep hills fold towards the river, vines run in neat lines across ancient terraces and little villages appear between the estates.
Six Senses gives families space to enjoy that landscape without needing to fill every minute with sightseeing. There are 71 rooms, suites and pool villas, including larger options suited to families and groups. The atmosphere is luxurious but relaxed, with gardens, quiet corners and experiences that connect guests to the region.
What worked particularly well for us was the balance. We could organise a vineyard visit or an outing to Lamego, then return for a swim, a game in the lounge or time beside the River Douro. It felt like a destination in itself rather than simply somewhere to sleep between excursions.
Our girls’ favourite experiences
The pickle-making class
The pickle-making class was one of the most memorable parts of our stay. It was practical, fun and just unusual enough to capture the girls’ attention. Instead of only being told about local ingredients and sustainability, they could get involved, make something and understand how food can be preserved.
This is exactly the sort of family activity we value: creative without being complicated, educational without feeling like a lesson, and enjoyable for adults too. Six Senses is known for experiences connected to food, plants and the environment, and this class brought that philosophy to life in a very child-friendly way.
Programmes can change with the season, so ask the hotel before arrival whether the pickling class—or a similar food workshop—is running during your stay. We would also reserve it in advance if it is important to your family.
Swimming in the pools
The swimming pool was naturally a favourite with the girls. Six Senses Douro Valley has a large outdoor pool and a heated indoor pool, making swimming possible in different seasons. The indoor pool is especially beautiful, with garden views and features designed around relaxation.
However, this was also the one aspect of the stay that did not work so well for us. Children’s access to the pool was restricted to designated hours. We understand that Six Senses has a strong wellness focus and wants to preserve quiet periods, but the limited timetable made family days less flexible. When children are excited to swim, arranging the rest of the day around a narrow window is not always easy.
If the pool is central to your holiday, contact the hotel before booking and ask for the current children’s swimming schedule, as policies and hours may change. Families visiting in cooler weather should be particularly clear about access to the indoor pool.
Board games in the lounge
Some of our happiest moments were also the simplest. The Quinta Bar and Lounge has table games, and we loved settling in for board games together. It gave us an easy activity between outings and was a lovely way to wind down in the evening.
In a hotel surrounded by extraordinary scenery and ambitious experiences, it would be easy to overlook this detail. Yet for families, a comfortable shared space can make a real difference. It allowed the girls to relax without retreating to the room, while we could enjoy the atmosphere of the hotel together.
Activities on the River Douro
The River Douro and its activities added another playful dimension to our stay. The girls could spend time outdoors and enjoy the landscape from a completely different perspective, surrounded by the valley's dramatic vineyard-covered hills.
Availability can depend on the weather, season and the hotel’s weekly programme, so check the activity schedule on arrival. Comfortable shoes are useful, and we would leave some unplanned time simply to explore the grounds rather than booking every hour.
A brilliant base for exploring vineyards
The hotel’s location is one of its greatest strengths. The Douro is one of the world’s most beautiful wine regions, and staying here places you close to historic estates, river experiences and vineyard-covered hillsides.
Wine tasting with children may not sound like an obvious combination, but the right visit can work well for the whole family. Choose a scenic estate where children can learn how grapes grow, walk through the vines or enjoy the views while adults taste local wines and port. Harvest season can be particularly exciting, with some experiences involving grape picking or stomping.
Six Senses can help organise wine experiences, river cruises, picnics and other regional adventures. Ask which options are most appropriate for your children’s ages, whether transfers are included and how long each excursion lasts. We find that one well-chosen vineyard visit is often more enjoyable for children than trying to fit several tastings into a day.
Visiting Lamego with kids
The proximity to Lamego makes it easy to add history and culture to the trip. The city is known for the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios and its dramatic Baroque staircase, as well as its cathedral, old streets and cafés.
With children, we would keep the visit relaxed. Explore the sanctuary and viewpoints, stop for a treat and allow time to wander rather than approaching the city as a checklist. The famous staircase has hundreds of steps, so younger children may prefer starting at the top or seeing only part of it—especially in warm weather.
Lamego works well as a half-day trip, leaving enough time to return to the hotel for a family activity, a board game or the children’s allocated swim session.
Rooms and villas for families
Six Senses Douro Valley offers rooms, suites and villas with a natural, contemporary style. Some have river or valley views, while selected villas include private pools. Larger families should ask about connecting arrangements, sofa beds and the maximum occupancy of each category rather than assuming a standard room will work.
For families who prioritise swimming freedom, a pool villa may be worth considering. Confirm the pool’s safety arrangements, whether it is heated and what supervision measures are available. A private pool can be a meaningful upgrade here because of the scheduled children’s hours at the shared pools.
When booking, we suggest asking for:
The best room configuration for your children’s ages
Current children’s pool hours
Details of family and food workshops during your dates
Which River Douro activities will be available
Child-friendly vineyard or river excursions
Restaurant opening times and children’s menus
Dining as a family
Food is central to the experience, with menus inspired by the region and an emphasis on seasonal produce. The Quinta Bar and Lounge is particularly useful for families because of its relaxed setting, tapas and table games. More structured dining experiences are also available, including Portuguese food experiences, picnics and special meals arranged by the hotel.
We recommend checking restaurant schedules in advance and reserving preferred dinner times, especially during school holidays. If your children eat early or have dietary requirements, let the team know before arrival. Part of the pleasure of staying here is discovering Portuguese ingredients together, but flexibility matters after a full day outdoors.
A suggested three-night family itinerary
Day one: Arrive and slow down
Settle into your room, explore the grounds and spend time beside the River Douro. Head to the lounge for a board game, then enjoy an early family dinner.
Day two: Hotel experiences and swimming
Book a hands-on food activity such as the pickle-making class, followed by lunch and pool time during the designated family hours. Keep the afternoon relaxed or arrange a picnic in the grounds.
Day three: Vineyards and Lamego
Visit one family-friendly vineyard in the morning, then explore Lamego after lunch. Return to the hotel for games in the lounge and a final dinner overlooking the valley.
Optional day four: The Douro River
Add a river cruise, scenic drive or another outdoor experience recommended for your children’s ages. A fourth night gives the holiday a gentler rhythm and prevents the trip from feeling over-planned.
Getting to Six Senses Douro Valley
The hotel is in Samodães, in the Lamego area of northern Portugal. Most international families will arrive through Porto and continue by pre-arranged transfer or hire car. The drive into the Douro is part of the experience, but the winding roads can take longer than the distance suggests.
A car gives you freedom to explore Lamego and nearby vineyards, although it is equally possible to ask the hotel to arrange transfers and excursions. If anyone in the family is prone to travel sickness, prepare for curving valley roads.
What parents should know before booking
The pool timetable matters. Children had limited swimming hours during our stay. Confirm the latest policy directly with the hotel before paying a deposit.
Activities may change. Food workshops and River Douro experiences can be seasonal, weather-dependent or scheduled only on certain days.
Plan, but leave space. The grounds and lounge are part of the pleasure; do not turn every day into a full itinerary.
Choose excursions for the children’s ages. A short, interactive vineyard visit will usually work better than a long tasting programme.
Expect a calm atmosphere. This is a wellness-led luxury resort, not a high-energy children’s resort. It suits families who enjoy nature, food and time together.
Ask what costs extra. Confirm prices for classes, transfers, vineyard visits, cruises and private experiences before booking.
Is Six Senses Douro Valley worth it for families?
For us, yes—with one reservation.
We loved watching the girls engage with the pickle-making class, enjoy activities on the River Douro, swim and turn quiet moments in the lounge into family game time. We also appreciated being so close to vineyards and Lamego while returning each day to a hotel that felt serene and special.
The restricted children’s pool hours were the clear downside. At this price level, we would prefer families to have more flexibility, or at least a dedicated family pool area with broader access. It did not spoil our stay, but it is something we would want every parent to know before booking.
If your children are curious, happy outdoors and enjoy experiences they can share with adults, Six Senses Douro Valley is a beautiful choice. It combines the pleasures of a sophisticated wine-country escape with enough thoughtful family moments to create memories for everyone.
